The kilt is the most iconic symbol of Scottish national dress. Originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century, the modern (small or walking kilt) is a skirt-type garment with pleats at the rear.

Kilts for men have evolved over the centuries. Starting life as the “Great Kilt”, which was a full-body garment that the wearer could also sleep in, kilts now have become contemporary fashion wear and worn for many purposes.

Although usually worn at formal events, men's kilts are also worn to sporting events, graduation balls, hiking, highland games and stag do's. Historically, the kilt was made from tartan material woven in wool but more recently contemporary styles have emerged such as solid black kilts, denim kilts and even leather kilts.
