From the late 19th to early 20th century the Irish adopted the kilt from their Gaelic cousins, the Scots, as a symbol of national pride. The Irish kilt was adapted from the traditional Scots tartan kilt and is wore in plain colours - either the Irish saffron kilt or green and grey versions.
